Planting Fruit Trees

Hutto’s has selected the best fruit trees that are recommended for our climate zone in Mississippi. Some fruit trees are self pollinators and others require a pollinator.

Planting your fruit trees in the winter or early spring gives the tree roots time to get acclimated before the stress of summer.

When planning your fruit trees be sure to dig your hole twice as wide and twice as deep as the container that the tree was purchased in. Carefully spread the roots out as needed when placing the tree in the hole.

Backfill the hole with a 50/50 mixture of the dirt you dug out with a good compost.

Mrs. Hutto’s bedding Mix is an excellent choice. We have blended an array of organic material to supply your trees with the nutrients it needs.

When packing the soil mixture around the roots make sure to keep the top of the root ball level with the ground.

With the remaining soil mixture create a moat around the base of the tree to allow water to filter down to the roots.

Immediately after planting we recommend using a root stimulator to help reduce transplant shock and encourage new root growth.

Be careful not to over water in the winter months. In the spring and summer water deeply when the soil becomes dry.

Be patient when growing fruit trees. It usually takes 4 to 7 years to have a sizable crop depending on the type of tree and its age when you plant it.

Take a look at some of the varieties of trees that we carry through out the year. Some varieties are not available at all times.
